COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Sc. in High Performance Computing is a one-year full-time taught program delivered at Trinity College Dublin, designed to provide advanced training in computational methods used for large-scale scientific and industrial problem-solving. The degree requires students to complete 90 ECTS in total, consisting of 60 ECTS of taught modules and a 30 ECTS research project. Assessment typically includes written examinations during the summer period as well as continuous assessment throughout the year. The curriculum covers a broad range of topics, including computer architecture, software optimisation, parallel programming, classical simulation, and stochastic modelling. Students also explore applied areas such as physical, chemical, and biological system simulation, financial risk modelling, telecommunications performance analysis, optimisation, and data mining. The program offers optional modules that allow students to specialise in specific application domains. A strong practical component is central to the course, with students having access to dedicated teaching laboratories and advanced computing infrastructure provided by Research IT, including large-scale parallel computing systems. This hands-on training prepares students for careers in mathematical modelling, simulation, forecasting, database mining, and advanced software development, particularly in parallel and concurrent systems. Graduates are well positioned for roles in research and industry across fields such as engineering, physics, chemistry, biotechnology, and finance.
