COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Sc. in Healthcare Infection is offered as a one-year full-time program or a two-year part-time program, with an additional option of a one-year full-time Postgraduate Diploma. Delivered at Trinity College Dublin, the course requires students to attend scheduled classes and assessment sessions as directed by module coordinators, with part-time students expected to complete at least two taught modules in their first year before progressing further. The program is designed to provide a structured and progressive understanding of infection control and management in healthcare settings. Students study four core taught modules: Basic and Molecular Microbiology, Antimicrobial Therapy and Resistance, Epidemiology and Infection Control, and Multidisciplinary Management of Infection. These modules provide a comprehensive foundation in the scientific, clinical, and organisational aspects of infection prevention and control. In addition to taught content, M.Sc. students complete a laboratory-based research project focused on a contemporary issue in infection control, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge to practical research questions. Students who exit with a Postgraduate Diploma complete only the taught modules and do not undertake the research project. Overall, the program prepares graduates to understand, investigate, and manage infectious diseases within modern healthcare systems through both academic study and applied laboratory experience.
