COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Sc. in Environmental Sciences is a full-time one-year program at Trinity College Dublin carrying 90 ECTS credits, which are split between a 60 ECTS taught component and a 30 ECTS research dissertation. The taught element is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, laboratory work, fieldwork, desk-based study, and independent learning. A distinctive feature of the program is its block teaching format, where most modules are delivered in concentrated two to three week periods, allowing students to focus intensively on each subject and complete assessments during or shortly after each block. The course covers a broad range of environmental topics, including hydrology and groundwater quality, environmental monitoring, earth system science, environmental policy, data analysis, resource management, practical environmental skills, project planning, and environmental entrepreneurship. Students also complete an introduction to environmental sciences and a desk-based study module that supports foundational understanding and research skills. Following the taught phase from September to May, students undertake an independent research project from June to September. This dissertation requires students to design, execute, and analyse original research in a chosen area of environmental science, applying the knowledge and skills gained throughout the program.
