COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in Screen Studies is structured to provide flexibility, allowing students to tailor their studies according to their academic and creative interests. The program consists of two main components: six taught modules worth 60 ECTS in total and a 30 ECTS research project. The taught modules are delivered across two semesters, with students selecting a combination of core and elective modules to suit their chosen pathway. Those interested in screenwriting can focus on writing-based modules such as writing for small and big screens, alongside core screenwriting training, and complete a screenplay as their research project. Alternatively, students who prefer a more academic route can choose modules focused on film analysis, cinema studies, and digital media, and complete a traditional research dissertation. Additional elective options may include areas such as digital storytelling, contemporary global cinema, Irish cinema, and experimental media, allowing for a broad and interdisciplinary learning experience. A key module in research methodologies supports students in preparing for their final project. The research component enables students to apply their knowledge through either creative production or critical analysis, depending on their interests. Overall, the structure balances theoretical study with practical application, helping students develop specialised skills in screen media, research, and creative production.
