COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in Race, Ethnicity, and Conflict is a one-year full-time program that combines taught modules with a substantial research dissertation. The course focuses on key global regions including Ireland, Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, and is delivered through a mix of lectures, interactive discussions, and student presentations. Teaching is conducted in small groups, allowing for active participation and personalised academic support, particularly in preparing the research-based dissertation. Assessment is primarily based on individual essays and group presentations, with students encouraged to align their coursework with their own academic and professional interests. The program includes three core modules covering theoretical concepts of race and ethnicity, research methods with a focus on colonialism, and the study of conflict and liberal intervention. In addition, students choose from a range of optional modules that may include topics such as international human rights law, gender and conflict, migration, education, social policy, and global conflict resolution. A key component of the program is the completion of a 20,000-word dissertation, which allows students to conduct in-depth research on a topic of their choice under one-to-one supervision from an expert. Overall, the structure supports the development of strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills in the field.
