COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in Philosophy is structured as a combination of taught coursework and independent research, designed to build a strong foundation for advanced philosophical study. The program includes six taught modules worth a total of 60 ECTS, which provide students with a comprehensive understanding of key areas in philosophy and prepare them for contemporary research. Teaching is delivered through small, seminar-style classes that encourage active participation, discussion, and close interaction with lecturers. This format supports deeper engagement with complex philosophical ideas and fosters critical thinking and analytical skills. Students typically study modules such as introduction to philosophical research, modern European philosophy, metaphysics, ethics, ancient philosophy, and the development of analytic philosophy, although specific offerings may vary each year. In addition to the taught component, students complete a substantial research dissertation worth 30 ECTS, which represents the culmination of the program. The dissertation, with a maximum length of 15,000 words, allows students to explore a chosen topic in depth and demonstrate their research and analytical abilities. Throughout this process, students receive one-to-one supervision from academic staff within the Department of Philosophy, ensuring guidance and support.
