COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in Linguistics at Trinity College Dublin is a structured postgraduate program that can be completed full-time over one year or part-time over two years. The course is organised around a combination of core and elective modules, followed by a substantial research dissertation. Full-time students typically take two core modules and one elective each term, while part-time students distribute the core modules across two years and complete electives alongside their studies. Across the program, students complete four core modules that provide a foundation in linguistic analysis: Describing Grammar, Describing Meaning, Describing the Sounds of Languages, and Experimental Analysis of Sound Systems. In addition, students choose two electives from a range of specialist topics, which may include Corpus Linguistics, Computer Assisted Language Learning, Linguistic Pragmatics, Multilingualism, Psychology of Language Learning and Teaching, Speech and Language Technology in Education, and Technology, Language, and Communication. These options allow students to tailor their studies to particular interests within linguistics and applied language study. In the final stage of the program, students undertake an independent research project, culminating in a 15,000-word dissertation that demonstrates their ability to conduct advanced linguistic research and analysis.
