COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in Identities and Cultures of Europe is a full-time one-year postgraduate program delivered at Trinity College Dublin, structured around taught modules, experiential learning, and independent research. The course includes two core modules, one in each semester, focusing on key questions of identity in Europe. These modules explore themes such as nationhood, migration, gender, memory, and culture through multiple disciplinary perspectives and case studies. Students also take four optional modules across the year, selecting from a wide range of topics such as food and cultural identity, forced migration, art and gender, racism and resistance, colonialism, and globalisation in different regional contexts. A distinctive feature of the program is a three-day field trip to Belgium, providing direct engagement with European cultural institutions, NGOs, and policy environments. In the second semester, students may also undertake an internship with an approved organisation in Dublin, depending on availability and selection. Additional learning includes an identity-focused workshop with contributions from academia, civil society, and the creative industries. The program concludes with a research dissertation on a chosen topic, supported by expert supervision. Overall, the course combines theoretical study with practical engagement to develop advanced understanding of identity in European and global contexts.
