COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in History of Art and Architecture is a one-year full-time program delivered at Trinity College Dublin, structured around 90 ECTS credits combining taught modules and an independent dissertation. The full-time course runs over 12 months from September, with teaching delivered across 24 weeks until April, followed by a dissertation submitted in August. Students also have the option of completing the program part-time over two years, available to EU, UK, and EEA students. In the part-time route, students complete Research Methods in Art History and two elective modules in the first year, followed by additional electives and the dissertation in the second year. The core module, Research Methods in Art History, introduces key sources, methodologies, and theoretical frameworks used in advanced art historical research. Students also select four elective modules that allow them to specialise in different periods, themes, and media, including Irish art or broader international perspectives. Recent elective topics include Insular art, print culture, built heritage in Ireland, Islamic book arts, Ireland–France artistic relations, gender and identity in art, visualising climate change, and drawing practices. The program culminates in a 15,000-word dissertation supervised by an academic specialist, allowing students to develop original research in their chosen area.
