COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in English Language Teaching is structured around six taught modules and a final dissertation, providing a balanced combination of theory, practice, and research. Students complete four core modules and two electives, with each module taught through weekly sessions over a term. Full-time students take two core modules and one elective per term, while part-time students spread their studies over two years, completing core modules across both years and one elective each year. All students also participate in tutorials focused on research methodology, supporting their academic and analytical development. The core modules cover essential areas such as second language curriculum planning, English grammar description, language testing, and pedagogical grammar, giving students a strong foundation in language teaching principles. Elective options allow for specialisation in areas such as computer-assisted language learning, corpus linguistics, teaching practice, multilingualism, pragmatics, psychology of language learning, and educational technology. In the final stage of the program, students complete a 15,000-word dissertation, applying their knowledge to an independent research topic with academic guidance. Delivered at Trinity College Dublin, the course equips students with both theoretical insight and practical skills needed for effective English language teaching in diverse global contexts.
