COURSE CURRICULUM

The M.Phil. in Early Modern History is structured to combine core study, specialised modules, research training, and an independent dissertation. All students complete a core module, Reading Early Modern History, which introduces key themes, historiography, and analytical approaches in the field. In addition, students select two major subjects of study, one in each academic term, allowing them to explore specific topics such as religious tolerance, revolutionary movements, political ideas, cultural practices, and Irish history in depth. Alongside these, students undertake research training modules that develop essential historical skills, including working with primary sources, understanding different methodologies, and building practical research techniques relevant to early modern studies. The program also includes participation in the Research Seminar in Early Modern History, hosted in association with the Trinity Long Room Hub, where students engage with leading scholars and current research. The final and most significant component of the course is the dissertation, a 15,000-word independent research project based on primary sources. Each student is supported by an academic supervisor who provides guidance throughout the research process, helping them develop critical thinking, writing, and analytical skills essential for advanced historical study.
