COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Art in Playwriting is structured across multiple semesters, combining core modules, workshops, and independent creative work to develop students’ skills in writing for the stage. In the first two semesters, students study three modules concurrently, while the fourth module is delivered in the final semester for full-time students or in the second year for part-time students, supported by masterclasses from professional writers and script editors. The Contemporary Theatre Practice module introduces students to modern theatre styles, theories, and performance practices, particularly within Dublin’s theatre scene, while also examining related media such as radio, television, and film. The Dramaturgy module focuses on analysing dramatic texts, understanding script structure, and exploring different approaches to developing scripts, alongside learning relevant theoretical and research skills. The Writing Workshop module emphasises practical skill development, allowing students to share their work, receive feedback, refine their personal writing style, and gain insight into professional writing contexts. The final Play module involves the creation of a full-length script under individual supervision, supported by collaboration with actors and directors during the drafting process. The program concludes with a rehearsed reading of selected works for an invited audience, providing valuable industry exposure and practical experience in theatrical production.
