COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first two years, students study core legal subjects such as Foundations of Law, Contract, Criminal, Constitutional, Tort, Equity, and Land Law alongside German language and cultural modules covering history, politics, society, and applied linguistics. The law component is smaller than in single honours programs, allowing continued focus on German. At the end of the first year, students choose a pathway: a professional law route leading to an LL.B. (German), a German-major B.A., a combined Law and German degree, or progression into Single Honours Law (LL.B.). Those aiming for a legal career can take all required professional modules while still developing language proficiency. In the third and fourth years, students take more advanced modules in both disciplines depending on their chosen pathway. German students must spend their penultimate year studying at a university in Germany, gaining immersion in the language and culture. The final year allows further specialisation in law and/or German, including topics such as literature, applied linguistics, culture, history, and society. Students also complete a research project on a topic of their choice, while LL.B. pathway students may undertake a legal placement. Assessment is based on coursework and written, oral, and aural examinations, ensuring development of analytical, linguistic, and professional legal skills.
