COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy program is structured over four years, combining academic study with extensive practical training to prepare students for professional practice. In the first two years, known as the Fresher years, students focus on the foundations of occupational therapy, including theories of occupation and core intervention approaches. They study essential human sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biology, and psychology to understand health and human function. Students are encouraged to learn through doing, developing communication and practical skills such as splinting and assistive technology. Service learning and experiential learning are key components, helping students build practical knowledge and professional skills. They also begin studying research methods and statistics to develop the ability to apply evidence to practice. During this stage, students complete approximately 10 weeks of supervised clinical practice. In the third and fourth years, known as the Sophister years, students deepen their understanding of occupational therapy theory and its application in real-world settings. They explore specific interventions, health and social care systems, policy, ethics, and clinical governance. Research skills are further developed, enabling critical evaluation of evidence for practice. Service learning continues with peer education elements. A major feature of the final years is an occupation-centred capstone project, alongside 23 weeks of supervised practice education, preparing students for professional occupational therapy careers.
