COURSE CURRICULUM

This four-year BSc (Hons) Midwifery program combines academic study with extensive clinical practice to prepare students for professional midwifery roles. The course covers key areas including midwifery knowledge and skills, communication and interpersonal abilities, ethical, legal and professional issues, biological sciences, psychology, pharmacology, social theory, health promotion, research, and the structure of maternal and social care services in Ireland. Students begin clinical placements in October of the first year, gaining early exposure to maternity care settings. Each year includes both university-based learning and hospital-based clinical practice, with the first three years following a traditional academic calendar and the final year consisting of a 36-week internship in midwifery practice. Teaching takes place mainly at the Trinity School of Nursing and Midwifery on D’Olier Street, as well as at Trinity College and the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences in St. James’s Hospital, using lectures, tutorials, small group sessions and practical classes. The program is delivered in partnership with The Coombe Hospital and The Rotunda Hospital, where each student is assigned consistent clinical placements, with additional opportunities in other healthcare settings such as Portlaoise and specialised units. Students complete approximately 30 to 35 hours of supervised clinical practice weekly, including community, mental health, high dependency, intensive care and neonatal placements. Assessment of both academic learning and clinical competence is continuous throughout the course.
