COURSE CURRICULUM

The Human Health and Disease program provides a comprehensive and practical understanding of the human body and disease processes. In the first and second years, students study the structure and function of the human body from a “molecule to man” perspective through lectures, tutorials, and laboratory classes. Core subjects include cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy, including dissection, helping students build a strong scientific foundation. Students also develop essential transferable skills through modules in critical thinking, problem-based learning, research methods, statistics, and presentation skills. In the third and fourth years, the course becomes more specialised, focusing on the nature, classification, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases. Students explore disease from the molecular and cellular level to its wider impact on society, public health, and research priorities. Clinically focused teaching is delivered by specialist clinicians, providing valuable real-world insights. In fourth year, students take advanced modules on the molecular basis of disease and the latest developments in biomedical science. A major part of the final year is a comprehensive laboratory-based biomedical research project supervised by leading researchers at Trinity and affiliated teaching hospitals in Dublin. Research topics may include cancer biology, neuroscience, tissue engineering, autoimmune diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, epidemiology, and public health. Assessment includes continuous individual and group-based evaluation of laboratory work, projects, and scientific writing, alongside semester examinations, preparing graduates for careers in biomedical research, healthcare, and further scientific or medical study.
