COURSE CURRICULUM

Dental Technology is a three-year ordinary degree program designed to train students to become skilled members of the dental team in planning, designing, and fabricating intra-oral appliances. Most teaching takes place at the Dublin Dental University Hospital, where students receive extensive practical, hands-on training from the beginning. The course focuses on four main areas: fixed prosthodontics, complete denture technology, removable partial denture technology, and orthodontic technology. In the first and second years, students spend much of their time in the teaching laboratory, attending six to eight three-hour practical sessions per week. Small class sizes allow for close supervision and effective skills development, while integration with Dental Science students promotes teamwork and interdisciplinary learning. First-year modules include fixed prosthodontics, occlusion and function, denture technology, orthodontic technology, physics, and chemistry. In the second year, students continue with advanced prosthodontics, denture and orthodontic technology, while also studying materials science and business studies. In the third year, students work in the production laboratory, providing services to patients and clinicians, gaining valuable real-world experience. They may also undertake placements in external laboratories or participate in the Erasmus program. Throughout the final year, students complete a dissertation and case portfolio, showcasing their technical ability and preparing them for professional careers in dental technology.
