COURSE CURRICULUM

The BDentSc (Hons) Dental Science program is a five-year course that gradually develops students’ scientific knowledge, clinical skills, and professional competence in dentistry. In the first and second years, students study foundational modules such as personal and professional development, human biology, physical science, basic dental care, oral biology, pathology, and public dental health. During the second year, students strengthen communication skills and learn to interpret and explain clinical signs and symptoms of systemic and oral diseases in relation to dental practice. Clinical training begins midway through second year, where students learn history taking, examination, diagnosis, and start performing simple treatments under supervision while also observing in clinics. In the third year, students study clinical medical sciences, prosthodontics, and comprehensive patient care. Fourth-year modules include advanced restorative dentistry, child dental health, oral medicine, oral surgery, oral pathology, and public dental health. In the fifth year, students continue with advanced restorative dentistry, evidence-based dentistry, and increasingly complex patient care. From years three to five, students manage oral health and disease in their own patients using the best available scientific evidence while considering broader healthcare issues affecting individuals and communities. Assessment methods are varied and include written exams, practical and skills tests, clinical examinations, reports, and oral presentations, ensuring students are fully prepared for professional dental practice.
