COURSE CURRICULUM

Students interested in Physics within the Physical Sciences program apply through the TR063 pathway and choose physics as their specialist area after completing the first two years of general study. In the third year, students focus on advanced topics such as quantum systems, electromagnetism, condensed matter physics, and the electronic and physical structure of materials. They also study atomic physics and semiconductor devices, with optional modules including galactic and stellar astrophysics, computational physics, experimental techniques, and observational astrophysics. A strong emphasis is placed on advanced laboratory work, where students develop data analysis, scientific interpretation, and communication skills. Students can also broaden their academic experience by taking elective modules in non-science subjects. In the fourth year, the program advances further with subjects such as quantum, nuclear, and particle physics, along with advanced electromagnetism and problem-solving techniques. Students can choose from a wide range of specialised modules, including photonics, energy science, nanoscience, polymers, magnetism, computational physics, cosmology, and quantum optics. The final year includes a capstone research project, where students work closely with Trinity researchers or international partners on real scientific problems. These projects cover cutting-edge areas such as machine learning in materials science, renewable energy technologies, semiconductor systems, and quantum physics, providing valuable research experience and practical skills.
