COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics and Astrophysics within the Physical Sciences program begins with two years of shared foundational study in core physics and related subjects, providing a strong base in scientific principles and mathematical methods. In the third year, students move into more advanced topics, including quantum systems, electromagnetism, and condensed matter physics, alongside the study of the electronic and physical structure of materials. Astrophysics becomes a key focus, with modules covering the formation and behaviour of stars and galaxies. Students also develop practical skills through specialised laboratory work in observational astrophysics and spectroscopic data analysis. Optional modules such as computational physics, experimental techniques, and semiconductor devices allow further skill development, while advanced laboratory work also strengthens science communication abilities. Students can broaden their education by taking electives in non-science subjects. In the fourth year, students study advanced topics such as planetary science, space science, cosmology, quantum mechanics, nuclear and particle physics, and electromagnetism. Additional options include photonics, magnetism, energy science, and computational physics. The program culminates in a capstone research project, where students work with Trinity researchers or international collaborators on real scientific problems, including areas like radio astronomy, solar activity, exoplanets, early universe studies, and supernovae, gaining valuable research and analytical experience.
