COURSE CURRICULUM

In the Nanoscience: Physical Sciences pathway, students begin the program with a broad foundation in chemistry, biology, and physics during the first two years of the Science degree. This provides essential scientific knowledge and skills before specialising. In the third year, students study advanced topics including quantum systems, electromagnetism, solid-state physics, and condensed matter, along with analytical and computational chemistry methods. They may also choose to specialise further in areas such as semiconductor physics or polymer chemistry. A major part of this year involves practical nanoscience laboratory work, where students design and carry out experiments focused on the synthesis and characterisation of nanomaterials, helping them understand their properties and applications. Communication skills in science are also developed. In the fourth year, students take advanced modules in materials chemistry and nanoscience, while continuing to strengthen problem-solving skills through small-group tutorials. They can further specialise in subjects such as magnetism and superconductivity, modern optics, energy science, or computational chemistry. The final year culminates in a capstone research project completed over one semester, where students join active research groups in the School of Chemistry, School of Physics, CRANN, or partner universities worldwide. This project provides real-world experience of cutting-edge nanoscience research and prepares students for careers or further study in advanced scientific fields.
