COURSE CURRICULUM

In the first two years, students study core legal subjects such as Foundations of Law, Contract, Criminal, Constitutional, Tort, Equity, and Land Law alongside modules in French language and culture, including history, politics, and applied linguistics. The law component is smaller than that of single honours students, allowing space for continued study of French. At the end of the first year, students choose a pathway: a professional law-focused route leading to an LL.B. (Ling. Franc), a French-major B.A., a combined B.A. in Law and French, or a transition into Single Honours Law (LL.B.). Those intending to pursue a legal career can select the necessary professional modules while still developing language proficiency. In the third and fourth years, students move into more advanced study in both disciplines depending on their chosen pathway. A key feature for French students is a mandatory year abroad in a French-speaking university during the penultimate year. The final year allows greater specialisation, with options to focus on law, French literature, linguistics, culture, history, or society, alongside completion of a research project. LL.B. students may also undertake a legal placement. Assessment combines written, oral, and aural examinations with coursework, ensuring development of analytical, linguistic, and professional legal skills.
