COURSE CURRICULUM

The History program at Trinity provides a broad and flexible academic journey through different historical periods, regions, and themes. In the first and second years, students study modules covering medieval and modern Irish, European, and American history, as well as global history, while also learning the key skills, methods, and debates historians use to interpret the past. Teaching combines lectures with small-group tutorials, encouraging discussion and deeper understanding. In second year, all students participate in a group research project, developing teamwork and investigative skills. Single Honours students follow a more structured pathway, while Joint Honours students choose modules to fit their broader degree. In the third and fourth years, students can specialise by choosing from a wide variety of advanced modules taught by experts in their fields. These include intensive research-based Special Subject modules using primary sources, broader thematic and analytical modules, and focused studies on specific texts or historical moments. Topics range from medieval marriage and the French Revolution to environmental disasters, the Troubles, and American politics. Third-year students also take research methods modules in historiography and proposal writing, often forming the basis for a fourth-year dissertation or Capstone project. Assessment throughout the program includes both examinations and coursework, with an equal balance in the final years. This structure helps students develop strong research, analytical, and communication skills while exploring diverse areas of political, cultural, social, environmental, and intellectual history.
