COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography degree provides students with a strong foundation in understanding the physical environment, human societies, and the interactions between them. In the first and second years, students build core knowledge through modules in physical and human geography, geology, and environmental processes. These years also include important foundation subjects such as mathematics, statistics, and computation, which help students develop analytical and technical skills. Students can tailor their learning experience by selecting optional modules from the chemical, physical, and biological sciences, as well as human geography, allowing them to explore areas of personal interest. In the third and fourth years, students deepen their understanding of specialised areas of geography while continuing to build practical and technical expertise. They participate in a residential field course, gaining valuable hands-on experience in observation, data collection, and field analysis. Students also learn advanced research techniques and skills that prepare them for carrying out an individual research project or dissertation. Topics studied in these later years include climate and environmental change, geomorphology, environmental governance, urban geography, globalisation and development, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing. This combination of classroom learning, technical training, and fieldwork equips graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to address real-world environmental and social challenges, leading to careers in research, planning, sustainability, environmental management, policy, and many other sectors.
