COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography and Geoscience degree provides a strong scientific and practical foundation in understanding the Earth and human-environment interactions over four years. In the first and second years, students gain broad knowledge in both Geography and Geoscience, with a focus on physical geography, geology, and environmental systems. They study important global issues such as climate change, sustainability, energy, natural resources, and natural hazards including volcanoes, earthquakes, and landslides. These foundation years cover topics such as the origins and development of the Earth, its structure and composition, atmospheric and ocean circulation, the evolution of life, and surface processes in environments like glaciers, rivers, and deserts. Students also examine the role humans play in shaping the Earth system, including impacts on land, air, and water, as well as challenges in environmental policy, governance, and management. In the third and fourth years, students deepen their expertise in specialist areas while developing practical and technical skills such as geochemical analysis and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The flexible program allows students to choose modules based on their interests, focusing on areas traditionally linked to Geography, such as geomorphology, globalisation, and sustainability, or Geology, including volcanology, palaeontology, and Earth resources. Students may also maintain a broader interdisciplinary approach, preparing them for diverse careers in environmental science, research, planning, sustainability, and resource management.
