COURSE CURRICULUM

The Film degree offers a broad and flexible curriculum that combines academic study with creative and practical training over four years. In the first and second years, students build a strong foundation in film history, theory, and analysis through core modules such as Introduction to Film Analysis, American Cinema from the Silent Era to the 1950s, Introduction to European and Non-Western Cinemas, Introduction to Digital Media, and Ireland and the Cinema. Students on the Single Honours pathway also take practical modules such as Introduction to Film Practice, Screenwriting, Editing, Video Essays, and Documentary Theory and Practice, helping them develop creative and technical skills. In the third and fourth years, students choose from a wide range of electives based on their interests and chosen pathway. Recent options include Irish Cinema, Melodrama, Digital Theory and Practice, Writing for Film and Television, Women and Film, Music in Audiovisual Media, Punk Cinema, Film Theory, Creative Producing, Visual Storytelling, and Cult Cinema. These advanced modules allow students to specialise in both critical and practical aspects of film. Assessment methods are varied and include essays, assignments, group and individual projects, presentations, blog posts, practical exercises, video essays, and class participation. In the final year, students complete a Capstone project, which may be a 10,000-word dissertation, a screenplay, a video essay, or a series bible accompanied by a 4,000-word critical analysis.
