COURSE CURRICULUM

The European Studies degree offers a balanced and interdisciplinary curriculum over four years, combining language learning with history and social sciences. In the first and second years, students study two European languages equally, along with the societies and cultures of the countries or regions where those languages are spoken. They also explore the history of early modern Europe, the history of ideas, and twentieth-century European history. In addition, students take an introductory module in a social science such as political science, sociology, or economics in the first year, followed by optional modules in history, politics, sociology, or economics in the second year. In the third year, students choose a major language and spend the year studying abroad at a partner university through that language, gaining fluency and valuable international experience. In the fourth year, students continue developing both their major and minor languages while selecting from a wide range of modules in history, political science, sociology, economics, culture, and literature. They also complete the core module Modernity and Society: Ideas and Culture in Europe since 1850 and write a Capstone project on a topic of their choice. Assessment includes continuous assessment and exams using written, oral, and listening tests, essays, presentations, projects, podcasts, book reviews, and dossiers. The program is also available through the Dual B.A. program between Trinity College Dublin and Columbia University.
