COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Computer Science, Linguistics and a Language (CSLL) is a four-year interdisciplinary program that develops expertise across computing, linguistics, and language studies. In the first year, students receive a comprehensive introduction to computers, programming, and the fundamental principles of how computer systems work, with no prior knowledge required. In the second year, students build on this foundation through more advanced programming, data structures, algorithms, and an introduction to computational linguistics, which explores how computers process language. Linguistics modules focus on the scientific study of sounds, words, syntax, and human communication, covering both theoretical and computational topics such as speech science, phonetics, and computational morphology. Mathematics courses support these technical areas. In the language stream, students develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in a chosen language while studying the culture and society of relevant countries. In the third and fourth years, students continue studying all three streams either at Trinity or abroad through the Erasmus program. Advanced modules include computational linguistics, speech recognition, machine translation, speech analysis and synthesis, second-language acquisition, machine learning, artificial intelligence, machine vision, and computer graphics. Students also refine translation, essay writing, and oral presentation skills in their chosen language. In the final year, students complete a Capstone project, which may combine disciplines or focus on one specialised area.
