COURSE CURRICULUM

The Trinity College Dublin Chemistry with Molecular Modelling: Chemical Sciences is a specialised degree based on the core Chemistry program, combining traditional chemistry with advanced computational modelling techniques. Students study essential branches of chemistry, including inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, alongside dedicated molecular modelling modules, practical laboratory work, and project-based learning. In the first two years, students complete foundation courses in Chemistry and Mathematics, together with either Biology or Physics, building a strong scientific base. In the third and fourth years, students continue with advanced chemistry modules while studying specialised topics such as general molecular modelling, quantum mechanics, optimisation, protein structure modelling, drug design, molecular dynamics, and modelling in solid-state materials chemistry. Teaching is supported by laboratory classes where students gain experience in advanced chemical preparation techniques and spectroscopic analysis, with about one-third of lab time spent in computer laboratories carrying out computational experiments. In the fourth year, students undertake a Capstone research project, usually from September to December, either at Trinity or in an academic or research laboratory abroad. This research experience is complemented by advanced lectures in core chemistry areas and a wide selection of optional modules that allow students to explore personal interests. The program is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and partially fulfils the academic requirements for Chartered Chemist (CChem) status.
