COURSE CURRICULUM

BA (Hons) Chemical Sciences (TR061) is a structured four-year degree that combines core training in chemistry with flexibility to specialise in related scientific fields. In the first year, students take 40 credits of core modules in Chemistry (20 credits) and Mathematics (20 credits), along with 20 additional credits chosen from either Biology plus Foundation Physics (Pattern 1) or Physics alone (Pattern 2). This choice influences later specialisation options. In the second year, students begin to shape their academic direction, with those in Pattern 1 able to choose pathways such as Chemistry, Chemistry with Biosciences, or Chemistry with Molecular Modelling, while Pattern 2 students can select Chemistry, Chemistry with Molecular Modelling, or Nanoscience. In the third year, students specialise further in one of five areas: Chemistry, Chemistry with Biosciences, Chemistry with Molecular Modelling, Medicinal Chemistry, or Nanoscience, which focuses on advanced materials. Admission to these pathways is based on both student choice and academic performance. Teaching is delivered in a research-led environment with small group instruction from active researchers, and students may also take Trinity Electives outside their main discipline. In the final year, students study advanced modules and complete a Capstone research project, either in Trinity or at an external research institute or industry partner in Ireland or abroad, providing significant practical and research experience.
