COURSE CURRICULUM

The Ancient and Medieval History and Culture is a four-year honours degree designed to provide students with a broad understanding of the ancient and medieval worlds through the study of art, architecture, archaeology, culture, and history. In the first year, students are introduced to these disciplines through lectures, seminars, and site visits, covering key developments from around 2000 BC to 1500 AD. The teaching approach is dynamic and emphasizes student participation. As the program progresses, modules become more specialised with a focus on intensive discussion and independent research. In the second year, students take compulsory modules in Medieval History, Greek History, Roman Imperial History, and Medieval Art, alongside elective options such as Irish, British, or European Medieval History, Latin, Architectural History, the Art of the Italian Renaissance, and Greek and Roman Archaeology. Students can also choose Trinity Elective modules. By the third year, only one compulsory module remains, exploring the Mediterranean in antiquity and the Middle Ages, with the rest of the modules selected based on student interests, including topics in ancient history, medieval history, art history, and archaeology. The final year allows for further specialised study through two chosen modules and the completion of a Capstone research project. Modules offered cover a wide range of subjects such as Greek and Roman entertainment, Hellenistic kings and cities, Vikings, medieval Irish history, Renaissance art, and more. Assessment throughout the program combines end-of-semester examinations with continuous assessments like essays, presentations, group projects, and source commentaries. The Capstone project in the final year allows students to conduct independent research, synthesising their learning and demonstrating their analytical skills. Overall, the program offers a comprehensive and engaging exploration of ancient and medieval history and culture, preparing students for advanced study or careers related to these fields.
