COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Biopharmaceutical Technology provides students with advanced scientific knowledge, laboratory experience, and industry-focused training in modern biopharmaceutical production and research. In the first semester, students study protein biochemistry, analytical tools for characterising biopharmaceuticals, cell culture and cell line development, research methods, and lean six sigma methodologies. These modules develop understanding of protein therapeutics, biopharmaceutical analysis, mammalian cell culture, research skills, process optimisation, and quality improvement techniques used within the biotechnology industry. A year-long practical module in methods in biopharmaceutical production gives students hands-on training in upstream and downstream processing, including CHO cell culture, protein recovery, analysis, troubleshooting, teamwork, and critical thinking. Students also receive specialist industry training at the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT). In the second semester, learners study immunobiologics, bioprocess technology, quality by design and project management, and contemporary issues in biopharma, gaining knowledge of therapeutic biologics, manufacturing systems, regulatory practices, quality management, and current industry developments through guest lectures and real-world case studies. The program concludes with a substantial research project in the third semester, where students undertake supervised laboratory-based research, conduct literature reviews, analyse experimental data, and present their findings through a written thesis and oral presentation, developing advanced research and professional communication skills.
