COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Art (MFA) program is structured to support the development of an independent, critically engaged, and professionally sustainable artistic practice. It combines research, practical production, and reflection to help artists situate their work within contemporary cultural and professional contexts. In the first semester, students study research methodologies to support postgraduate-level artistic inquiry and explore ecologies of practice, which examines the networks, systems, and structures that enable creative work to exist and develop. A major component of the program is “Navigating Practice,” a practice-based module that runs through stages of negotiation, residency, and realisation, where students plan, develop, and reflect on a substantial body of work. In the second semester, this practice continues alongside critical cartographies, which encourages theoretical and philosophical reflection on artistic practice, and narrating and circulating practice, which focuses on how work is presented, communicated, and shared with audiences. During the summer, students continue their practice development through further cycles of negotiation, residency, and realisation. The final semester culminates in “Towards a Sustainable Practice,” where students present their resolved body of work and critically reflect on their future professional direction. Overall, the MFA emphasises sustained practice, critical thinking, and professional readiness within contemporary art contexts.
