COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Fine Arts program is structured to support the development of an independent, reflective, and professionally engaged artistic practice through a combination of research-led study and extensive practice-based work. In Semester 1, students begin with Research Methodologies, which provides the tools needed for postgraduate-level artistic inquiry, alongside Ecologies of Practice, which explores the networks and systems that support and sustain creative work. A major component of the program is Navigating Practice (50 credits), where students begin planning, researching, negotiating, realising, and reflecting on a body of work through stages that include negotiation, residency, and realisation. In Semester 2, students continue Navigating Practice at an advanced level, further developing their work through sustained practice. They also study Critical Cartographies, which encourages critical analysis of their practice through philosophical and conceptual frameworks, and Narrating and Circulating Practice, which focuses on how artistic work is presented, communicated, and shared in professional contexts. During the summer period, Navigating Practice continues as a major practice-based development phase. In Semester 3, students complete Towards a Sustainable Practice, a capstone module that focuses on presenting final research outcomes and critically reflecting on the long-term sustainability of their artistic career. Overall, the program emphasises continuous practice development, critical reflection, and professional positioning within contemporary art contexts.
