COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) in Youth Work and Community Development is structured over four years to develop students into reflective, skilled, and socially aware practitioners working with young people and communities. In Year 1, students are introduced to core concepts such as principles of youth work, community development, sociology, psychology, communication, groupwork, and academic skills, building a strong theoretical and practical foundation for understanding social issues, identity, and professional practice. Year 2 deepens this knowledge through modules on professional youth work practice, community development models, ethics, participatory methods, placemaking, arts for social impact, and sociology of inequality, alongside preparation for and completion of substantial practice placements. Students begin applying theory in real settings while developing relationships, communication skills, and ethical awareness. In Year 3, emphasis is placed on advanced practice, research skills, reflective professional development, social policy, sustainability, and values-based practice, supported by extended placements and academic inquiry for final year preparation. Students also critically examine marginalisation, human rights, and social structures affecting communities. In Year 4, learners complete hybrid placements, study leadership, governance, training, and integrated practice models, and engage with emerging issues in the sector. The program concludes with a major research project and modules focused on arts-based community engagement and professional leadership. Overall, the degree combines academic study, field placement experience, and critical reflection to prepare graduates for impactful careers in youth work and community development.
