COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) in Microbiology is a four-year program that provides a comprehensive understanding of microorganisms and their essential roles in health, industry, environment, and biotechnology. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation in mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, scientific computing, and information technology, alongside introductory microbiology concepts and general scientific skills. Year 2 focuses on core microbiological disciplines such as microbial biochemistry, genetics, systematics, virology, immunology, applied microbiology, sterilisation, and statistical methods, supported by extensive laboratory training and enquiry-based learning. In Year 3, students develop applied and industry-focused knowledge through modules in environmental, food, and industrial microbiology, bioprocessing, quality systems, clinical trials, and sustainability, as well as completing a significant work placement in a scientific or industrial setting. Year 4 advances into specialised and research-driven topics including advanced environmental, industrial, and food microbiology, bioinformatics, computational biology, and research methods, culminating in an independent research project. Throughout the program, students gain practical laboratory skills, data analysis abilities, and experience with modern computational tools, while also developing an understanding of regulatory standards and industrial practices. Graduates are prepared for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, environmental science, and research, or for further postgraduate study in advanced biological and biomedical fields.
