COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Mental Health Nursing prepares students to become competent, recovery-focused professional nurses capable of delivering individualised care across hospital and community settings. Accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland, the program combines extensive theoretical study with substantial clinical placements in healthcare environments. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, psychology, communication, and nursing practice, alongside early clinical exposure and professional preparation. Year 2 expands into mental health conditions such as mood, anxiety, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders, while also covering community care, older adult mental health, general nursing principles, group therapies, and emergency care. Year 3 deepens expertise through counselling skills, bereavement and loss, personality disorders, biomedical treatments, research appreciation, and applied sociology, supported by continued clinical placements and elective modules. Year 4 focuses on advanced practice, leadership, health and social policy, integrated mental health nursing, and preparation for internship, culminating in a substantial final clinical placement internship where students demonstrate safe, competent, and autonomous practice. Across the program, students develop clinical reasoning, communication, ethical awareness, and evidence-based practice skills essential for modern mental health nursing careers in diverse healthcare settings supporting lifelong professional development and safe patient-centred care practice
