COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biotechnology degree curriculum provides a comprehensive progression from foundational sciences to advanced, industry-focused knowledge and skills. In the first year, students build a strong base in biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics, alongside laboratory safety, scientific methods and transferable skills such as communication, teamwork and data analysis. The second year deepens understanding through modules in genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, organic chemistry and analytical techniques, while also developing statistical and research skills. Students explore cell biology, gene technology and microbial genetics, gaining both theoretical knowledge and laboratory competence. In the third year, the focus shifts to specialised topics such as molecular biology, immunotechnology, environmental biotechnology, applied genetic engineering and quality compliance in regulated industries. Practical experience is a key component, with a substantial work placement or industry-relevant project that allows students to apply their learning in real-world scientific or manufacturing environments. In the final year, students engage with advanced areas including bioinformatics, bioprocess technology, analytical biotechnology and regulatory affairs, while also developing research and experimental design skills. The program concludes with an independent research project, enabling students to integrate their knowledge and prepare for careers in biotechnology, particularly in biopharmaceuticals, or for further postgraduate study.
