COURSE CURRICULUM

The Agricultural Science and Sustainability – BSc (Hons) program at Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest provides a structured, practice-oriented curriculum that integrates agricultural science with environmental sustainability. In Year 1, students build foundational knowledge in sustainable development, environmental chemistry, laboratory skills, forestry, and Irish farming systems, alongside communication and analytical skills. Practical agricultural learning continues at Gurteen College, where students study crop husbandry, soils, biology, animal production, and farm safety. Year 2 deepens expertise in farm management, dairy, beef, and sheep production, animal welfare, breeding strategies, and agri-business, while also introducing biodiversity, ecology, GIS, and the wider agri-food sector. In Year 3, students focus on advanced topics such as grassland and nutrient management, environmental impacts of agriculture, water quality, and farm planning, supported by professional development and GIS applications. A major feature is the work placement, where students gain hands-on experience in agriculture or environmental sectors. In Year 4, the program advances into environmental management systems, sustainable agricultural systems, policy, and project management, alongside specialised topics like carbon management, soil science, and climate change. The final year project allows independent research. Overall, the course blends scientific knowledge, practical farm skills, and environmental awareness to prepare graduates for sustainable agriculture careers.
