COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Medical Technology is structured over three years, combining science, engineering and healthcare applications to prepare students for careers in clinical engineering and the medical device or software industries. In Year 1, students build a strong foundation through modules in applied chemistry, cell biology, physics for healthcare, mathematics, computing for healthcare, and introductory electronics. They also study design principles in medical technology and professional development, gaining early insight into healthcare systems, programming in C, and basic circuit theory. In Year 2, learning becomes more specialised with anatomy and physiology, applied physics, biomechanics, biomaterials, medical instrumentation, and ICT for healthcare. Students also study infection control, electrical safety, statistics, and advanced mathematics, alongside clinical technology concepts such as ECG, imaging systems, and patient monitoring devices. Year 3 focuses on professional application and industry readiness through modules in clinical technology, operating department technology, information systems for healthcare, programming in Python, and quality assurance and validation. Students also complete a major industry placement, gaining hands-on experience in hospitals or medical technology companies. Additional study in clinical asset and risk management develops skills in safety, equipment lifecycle management, and regulatory compliance. Overall, the program integrates theory, laboratory work, computing, and real-world clinical exposure to prepare graduates for technical, clinical, and industry roles in healthcare technology.
