COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering program provides a comprehensive education in the design, construction, and management of infrastructure essential to modern society. Across four years, students build strong foundations in mathematics, structural analysis, surveying, materials science, geotechnics, hydraulics, and environmental engineering, while progressively advancing toward complex design and project management skills. Early modules focus on core technical areas such as engineering mathematics, soil mechanics, building information modelling, and structural design, supported by practical laboratory and surveying work. As the program develops, students study more advanced topics including geotechnical engineering, fluid mechanics, traffic engineering, contract administration, and sustainable construction materials, alongside industry-standard design codes such as Eurocodes. Later years emphasise applied learning through structural and scheme design, engineering management, legal and ethical practice, and real-world software applications used in industry. A significant feature is the work placement, offering hands-on professional experience and strengthening employability. Final-year studies include advanced structural and geotechnical engineering, wastewater treatment, foundation engineering, and applied hydraulics, alongside a major dissertation and research methods training. Students also undertake integrated scheme design projects that simulate professional engineering practice. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on sustainability, innovation, safety, and environmental responsibility. Graduates are equipped with analytical, technical, and managerial skills needed to contribute to infrastructure development and solve real-world engineering challenges in a rapidly evolving global industry.
