COURSE CURRICULUM

The BEd (Hons) in Technology, Engineering and Graphics is a four-year teacher education program designed to prepare students to teach Technology, Engineering, and Design & Communication Graphics at post-primary level. In the early years, students develop strong foundations in engineering materials, electronics, mechanics, control systems, and technical graphics, alongside education theory, pedagogy, and modelling approaches. They also build practical skills in CAD, manufacturing processes, ICT systems, and design realisation, supported by applied laboratory and workshop work. As the program progresses, students move into more advanced topics such as computer-aided engineering, manufacturing systems, applied geometry, and technology subject pedagogy, while also developing inclusive education knowledge, sustainability awareness, and teaching methodologies. School placement and microteaching experiences begin early and expand significantly, allowing students to practice lesson planning, classroom management, and student engagement in real school environments. In later years, students undertake DCU-based studies in education theory, curriculum design, assessment, and professional identity, alongside research training and extended school placements. Final year work includes a capstone technology education project, an extended research study, and an advanced school placement where students demonstrate full teaching competence. Overall, the program combines engineering, design, and graphics expertise with strong educational training to produce qualified, reflective, and innovative post-primary teachers.
