COURSE CURRICULUM

This four-year program provides a balanced combination of subject knowledge, teaching skills, and practical experience to prepare students for a career as post-primary teachers in Home Economics and Technology. In the first year at the TUS Athlone campus, students build foundational knowledge in education theory, food science, textiles, materials technology, electronics, and social studies, while also exploring nutrition, mechanics, and design basics. The second year deepens this learning with more advanced modules in food production, sustainability, manufacturing systems, ICT, and applied control, alongside early teaching preparation and pedagogy. In the third year, based at the DCU campus in Dublin, students focus more on educational theory, inclusive education, sustainability, and subject-specific teaching methods, while also developing research skills and gaining practical classroom experience through school placement. The final year further enhances professional development through modules on curriculum, policy, and assessment, as well as teacher identity and practice. Students also complete an extended research project and undertake advanced school placement to refine their teaching skills in real-world settings. Overall, the program ensures graduates develop strong subject expertise, teaching competence, and professional confidence, preparing them to effectively educate and inspire students in Home Economics and Technology at post-primary level.
