COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Addiction Recovery – BA (Hons) program at Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest offers a comprehensive curriculum that integrates theory, personal development, and extensive practical experience to prepare students for professional roles in addiction and community work. In Year 1, students are introduced to core concepts such as mental health and addiction, addiction theory, community development, youth work, safeguarding, and personal development, alongside facilitation and case management skills. Year 2 deepens understanding through modules on physiological aspects of addiction, behavioural processes, ethical awareness, trauma-informed approaches, and evidence-based prevention, combined with significant professional placements that build practical competencies. In Year 3, students advance their expertise in areas such as non-substance addictions, social determinants, applied intervention skills, and practitioner identity, while continuing structured placements to strengthen real-world experience. Year 4 focuses on advanced concepts including recovery frameworks, therapeutic interventions, information management, and social policy, culminating in a consultancy project that integrates learning in a practical setting. Additional placements and modules on contemporary issues and professional development ensure graduates are workplace-ready. Overall, the program combines academic knowledge, reflective practice, and hands-on training, equipping students to effectively support individuals and communities affected by addiction.
