COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting is a studio-based program that develops students’ artistic practice through continuous engagement with painting, research, critical study and professional experience. In the first year, students build foundational skills in studio painting, drawing and material processes while exploring critical and contextual studies of modern and contemporary art. They also participate in collaborative projects, off-site cultural activities and introductory professional practice, including exhibition organisation and public engagement. The second year expands technical and conceptual abilities through more complex painting methods, supported by studio work, critiques, gallery visits and theoretical input. Students also prepare for professional placement, gaining experience in cultural institutions, galleries or creative organisations, followed by reflection on their learning. In the final stages of the program, students develop independent research-led painting practices, refining their visual language and conceptual direction while engaging deeply with contemporary art discourse. They undertake professional practice training focused on sustaining a career in the arts and produce a substantial body of work for exhibition. Alongside this, critical and contextual studies support advanced academic research and writing within visual culture. Overall, the program combines studio experimentation, critical thinking and real-world engagement to prepare graduates for professional artistic careers and further creative development.
