COURSE CURRICULUM

The BA (Hons) Ceramics in Expanding Practice program focuses on contemporary ceramics combining traditional and digital making, encouraging experimentation, inclusivity and material exploration. In Year 1 students develop core skills such as hand-building, wheel throwing, mould making, slip casting, glazing and kiln firing alongside digital technologies like 3D printing and laser cutting, supported by studio workshops, critique and research informed by field trips and contextual studies. Professional practice placements begin early, building communication, presentation and career awareness. As the course progresses, students strengthen technical ability while deepening critical understanding of design history and contemporary visual culture, and begin applying skills in real-world contexts through exhibitions and placements. Year 3 emphasises independent practice, self-directed projects, specialisation and professional engagement including work placements, Erasmus exchanges and collaborative exhibitions, supported by advanced ceramics workshops and contextual research. Year 4 focuses on a self-directed body of work, professional presentation skills, exhibition production and advanced ceramic techniques tailored to individual direction, culminating in a final exhibition and online portfolio. Throughout, critical and contextual studies modules develop research, writing and analytical skills, while studio practice integrates materials, process and conceptual development.
