COURSE CURRICULUM

The Research Methodology module prepares students for postgraduate research and provides the foundation required to successfully complete the dissertation. It introduces research techniques, academic writing, and critical analysis skills that are essential for independent research. Personal Development and Effectiveness focuses on preparing students for professional practice and management roles by encouraging self-reflection and critical evaluation of their own performance and professional capabilities. The Statistical Analysis for Engineers module provides students with the knowledge required to collect, present, analyse, and interpret statistical data, which is an important skill for research and engineering decision-making.Several modules focus on energy performance and modelling of buildings. Energy Modelling for nZEB Design develops students’ ability to use dynamic thermal simulation software to analyse the energy consumption of buildings by examining the performance of the building envelope. Energy Modelling for HVAC Systems and Controls further builds on this knowledge by applying simulation tools to evaluate heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning systems and their impact on building energy performance and regulatory compliance. Mechanical Services Systems provides detailed knowledge of mechanical services and HVAC systems within buildings, enabling students to analyse their operation and evaluate their implications for energy use. Low Energy Building Systems Design introduces advanced passive and active design strategies, along with thermal generation technologies that contribute to reducing energy demand in buildings.The program also addresses broader environmental and technical aspects of building performance. Sustainability and the Environment explores key sustainability issues and environmental challenges associated with the built environment. Energy Auditing equips students with the specialised knowledge required to measure energy flows within buildings and conduct comprehensive energy audits. Building Performance and Analysis focuses on identifying and diagnosing energy-related defects in buildings and recommending appropriate solutions. Electrical Systems and Energy Monitoring provides an understanding of electrical physics and the methods used to capture and analyse energy-related data from buildings. Finally, Electrical Generation Technology introduces students to different power generation technologies relevant to the built environment, helping them understand how energy can be produced and managed more efficiently within modern building systems.
