COURSE CURRICULUM
The Master of Engineering in Applied Materials includes a range of modules designed to develop both theoretical knowledge and practical engineering skills. The program begins with core subjects that build a strong understanding of materials and their behaviour in engineering applications. Materials Science in Engineering introduces the fundamental principles of materials, including their structure, properties, and performance in different environments. Applied Mechanics of Materials focuses on how materials respond to forces and stresses, helping students understand how components behave under real operating conditions.Students will also study Finite Element Analysis I and II, which provide training in computational modelling and simulation techniques used to predict how materials and structures respond to mechanical, thermal, and environmental loads. These modules help learners develop the skills required to analyse complex engineering problems and improve product design using simulation software.Innovation and modern industrial practices are also key parts of the program. Modules such as Design Driven Innovation and Materials in Processing and Industry 4.0 explore how new technologies and advanced manufacturing systems influence product development and industrial production. Innovation for Sustainable Enterprise focuses on sustainable engineering practices and the development of environmentally responsible materials and solutions.Research and professional development are also central to the course. Research Methods for Engineering prepares students to conduct independent research by introducing research design, data analysis, and technical reporting. Students will then complete either a Dissertation in Engineering or a Work-based Project, allowing them to apply their knowledge to a real research or industry problem. The Professional Development module supports the development of communication, project management, and career skills required in modern engineering workplaces.A special feature of the program is its strong emphasis on hands-on research and practical experimentation. Students have access to industry-standard equipment, including static and dynamic universal testing machines (UTMs), advanced microscopy tools such as 3D and dark field microscopes, and specialised environmental test chambers. These facilities allow students to gain valuable practical experience in testing, analysing, and evaluating engineering materials.
