COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying is a four-year honours program designed to equip students with the technical knowledge, financial expertise, and professional skills required to manage construction projects effectively. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in management, economics, residential technology, measurement and estimating, land surveying, and introductory BIM and ICT skills. This year develops both analytical and practical competencies, ensuring that students can understand the fundamentals of construction projects and the role of quantity surveying within them. In the second year, the curriculum focuses on cost planning, procurement strategies, project management, commercial and services technology, and an integrated project that allows students to apply learned principles to realistic construction scenarios. Elective modules provide flexibility for students to explore specific interests and emerging areas within the profession. Year three emphasizes advanced topics including construction administration, contract studies, advanced measurement, construction health and safety, and research methods. Students also complete an industrial placement, providing practical industry experience and exposure to real-world construction projects. The fourth and final year deepens professional competencies with modules in development economics, marketing and finance, value management, project and corporate management, services technology integration, and QS professional practice. Students also undertake a dissertation, allowing them to investigate a specific area of interest in depth, as well as a second industrial placement to consolidate industry experience. Throughout the program, students develop essential skills in cost estimation, financial management, contract administration, and project coordination, preparing them for a career in both residential and commercial construction, consultancy, and project management. Graduates are well-positioned to become professional Quantity Surveyors, combining expertise in construction technology, finance, and management to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the client’s specifications. This comprehensive approach ensures that graduates can respond effectively to the evolving demands of the construction industry.
