COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science is a four-year honours degree designed to equip students with the scientific knowledge, practical skills, and industry experience needed for careers in the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical sectors. The program combines a strong foundation in core sciences, including biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, with specialised modules in pharmaceutical science, biopharmaceutical processing, analytical techniques, and drug formulation. Students also study regulatory affairs, quality management, pharmacology, and drug design, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of how medicines are developed, manufactured, tested, and delivered safely.In the first year, students build essential laboratory and scientific skills through modules such as introductory biology, chemistry, physics, and good laboratory practice, along with elective options to broaden their scientific knowledge. The second year develops expertise in organic and inorganic chemistry, pharmaceutical processing, and chromatographic and spectroscopic techniques, alongside data analysis and applied mathematics. This solid scientific grounding prepares students for advanced study and laboratory work in the later years of the program.The third year introduces practical industry-focused experience, including total quality management, pharmaceutical biotechnology, pharmaceutical natural products, and advanced spectroscopic analysis, culminating in a dedicated work placement. This hands-on placement provides students with real-world experience, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge, develop professional skills, and engage with current industrial practices.In the final year, students consolidate their expertise through advanced topics in pharmaceutical science, physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, pharmaceutical formulation, drug delivery, and regulatory compliance. A substantial research project allows students to apply scientific inquiry and problem-solving skills to real-world pharmaceutical challenges. Graduates are prepared for careers in drug development, quality assurance, biopharmaceutical production, regulatory affairs, and research, with excellent employment prospects in Ireland and internationally, as well as opportunities for postgraduate study or further scientific research.
